This was our first event public where we had a full 2 hours for music. We got together and picked a set of songs, and as we rehearsed, each song developed it’s own unique flavor. We recorded the 2 sets of music, and Wes is currently breaking up individual MP3s for each song. Overall, the placed was comfortably packed, and many of our friends came out.

Afterwards, we went to get sushi (which is becoming a tradition of ours). We got placed in the karaoke room since there was such a big group of people with us. Daniel had his cello with him, and after trying to get me to sing, people tried convincing Daniel to play cello on some pop tune. Daniel declined, as he didn’t feel like unpacking his instrument, but then decided he’d reconsider if Raj would freestyle on stage.

What ended up happening was Daniel, Raj, and I on stage. I sang a verse of “Over the Rainbow,” Raj freestyled for some girl’s birthday dinner, while Daniel played on his cello. It was an unforgettable night! Later on, Daniel got offerred a job by the owner of I Love Sushi.

This was our setlist:

  • Autumn Leaves
  • Four
  • Round Midnight
  • There Will Never Be Another You
  • Mario Bros
  • Blues for Alice
  • Triste
  • Body and Soul
  • Like Someone in Love
  • Zelda
  • Don’t Get Around Much Anymore

A few days prior, while preparing for this show, Raj had this idea to put a beat under “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore,” mostly because he thought the song sounded too “Toy Story.” Our closer ended up being a funked out version of this standard, I thanked our audience and named all our musicians, and then we played one chorus through, “Toy Story” style. The contrast was outstanding!
